Tara Miko Ballentine, founder and CEO of Bright Littles, emphasizes the importance of parents discussing the growing risks of an increasingly digital world with their children.

“Talking to our kids about online safety can feel a little awkward or even uncomfortable but staying silent leaves them unprepared,” said Miko Ballentine. “Simple, age-appropriate conversations help them think critically, spot red flags, and protect themselves in a digital world that’s growing and changing faster than they are.”

According to Common Sense Media’s 2025 report, approximately three in four parents view screen media as a tool for learning and connection, as well as a source of positive content. The same research indicates that nearly one in three children use artificial intelligence for educational purposes.

A recent Gallup poll reveals that more than four in ten parents find it challenging to discuss their child’s feelings and social media use. Ballentine states that it is crucial for parents to engage in conversations with their children about online safety early and often. She suggests that instead of adopting a reactive approach to screen time and safety, parents should educate themselves and take proactive measures by providing tools to build awareness and confidence.

An Education Week survey highlights that nearly 80% of 11- to 13-year-olds own a smartphone. The report also notes that even children without personal phones frequently access the internet through school iPads, YouTube, video games, or friends’ devices.

Ballentine asserts that early discussions about online safety are vital because habits form at a young age, mistakes made early are easier to learn from, and prevention serves as protection. “Proactive parenting online isn’t about control—it’s about protection,” she said.

Bright Littles is an Austin-based company founded by Ballentine. The organization aims to equip parents with award-winning tools necessary for engaging conversations with their children to nurture kinder and more thoughtful individuals.
