The Austin Independent School District announced on May 22 that it will increase the number of instructional days in the 2026-2027 academic year from 169 to 171. The change will add one additional school day each in October and February.
District officials said these adjustments are part of a strategic initiative aimed at increasing instructional time and supporting student achievement. According to the announcement, “The changes to the academic calendar are purposefully designed to provide students with the additional learning opportunities and time required to strengthen academic outcomes across every school in the district.”
For future years, district leaders plan to further expand instructional time by adding three more days, with a long-term goal of reaching a total of 175 instructional days. “In the years following this initial shift, the district plans to add three additional days, with the ultimate objective of reaching a total of 175 instructional days,” according to their statement.
The Austin Independent School District educates more than 72,000 students and employs over 5,000 classroom teachers across its diverse communities; it operates 116 schools that include elementary, middle, high schools as well as early college programs and alternative campuses. The district supports a multicultural environment where more than 100 languages are spoken by students and offers instruction in over ten languages other than English. It maintains a graduation rate of over ninety-three percent and surpasses state averages on standardized tests such as SAT and ACT, according to the official website.
Looking ahead, officials say these calendar modifications reflect an ongoing commitment to providing students with greater learning opportunities while partnering with families and community members for student success in college, career, and life.
