Baylor Scott & White Health has expanded its facilities in the Greater Austin region to address the growing healthcare needs of the community. The recent development at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock includes a new five-story patient tower, effectively doubling the hospital’s capacity.

Jay Fox, CEO and president of Baylor Scott & White Greater Austin Region, stated, “At the heart of the expansion is a simple idea: care that’s closer, more personal, and high-quality.” This sentiment underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare services as Austin continues to grow.

The expansion features a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), offering Level III care for newborns with complex medical needs. This makes it the only facility in northern Austin providing such specialized care. Additionally, an expanded Labor & Delivery Unit aims to accommodate the increasing number of births at the center.

Fox emphasized that “this space is more than additional square footage, this is a commitment to our community to deliver high-quality care where they are.” The new adaptable patient care rooms will allow staff flexibility in meeting diverse patient needs.

Ghassan Salman, MD, chief medical officer of Baylor Scott & White – Greater Austin Region, highlighted the importance of proximity in healthcare: “When you or your loved one is going through a medical journey — whether undergoing surgery, having a baby, or receiving a tough diagnosis — having your support system nearby is crucial.”

Beyond physical expansion, Baylor Scott & White is addressing workforce challenges. Texas faces a significant physician shortage by 2032 according to state data. To combat this issue, Baylor Scott & White has incorporated educational facilities into its new space at Round Rock for training medical professionals.

Baylor Scott & White operates one of Texas’s largest medical education programs and educates over 9,000 medical professionals annually. New simulation labs and workspaces for residents have been added as part of their commitment to workforce development.

The health system’s vision focuses on empowering individuals to live well by making healthcare more accessible and personalized. Through initiatives like MyBSWHealth for virtual care access and expanding physical locations across Central Texas—including nine hospitals and over 70 clinics—the organization strives to meet evolving community needs.

“As our community grows,” Fox concluded, “so does our commitment to meeting its needs. We’re working to build a healthier future for our friends, neighbors and our entire region.”

The expansion at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Round Rock signifies an investment in both present and future healthcare provision for Central Texans.
