Texans on average now pay a shade under $2.90 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, the lowest average gas price among all 50 states, according to a report from AAA Texas.

In the Austin area, the current price for a gallon of regular gas was even lower than the state average at about $2.85, the study by the state affiliate of the American Automobile Association said.

Last year, the average price for regular gas in Texas was 95 cents less than the current price level, AAA Texas reported. Demand for gas has surged as a result of pre-holiday consumer confidence, the study found

Among the major metropolitan regions examined in the report, Odessa drivers paid the most for a gallon of gas: $3.07. San Antonio residents paid the least at $2.68 per gallon.

The national average price for regular unleaded is now $3.30 per gallon, which is more than $1 above what Americans paid at the same time in 2020, the study said.

California drivers paid the highest gas prices in the nation, with the price for regular unleaded reaching $4.66 per gallon.
