This Pride Month, the City of Austin’s Office of Sustainability is recognizing members of the LGBTQ+ community. The office emphasizes that a thriving, equitable, and resilient Austin cannot be achieved without their presence and contributions.
Highlighting the green stripe in the Pride flag, which represents a connection with nature, the office has organized several local events to celebrate sustainably.
One event is the Austin Pride Trail Run/Hike hosted by the East Austin Run Club. It will take place on the Barton Creek Greenbelt on Thursday, June 13, from 6-8 pm. Participants can meet others and enjoy outdoor spaces. The event welcomes everyone from seasoned runners to beginners with multiple paces for hikers, joggers, and runners.
Urban Roots will host Pride Takeover: Queer Safe Space Day at its East Austin Farm on Saturday, June 22 from 9 am – 12 pm. LGBTQIA2+ community members are invited to enjoy food, music, company, nature, a makers’ market, clothing swap, and optional farm work.
The Dougherty Arts Center will hold DAC Nights: Mend Mania on Wednesday, June 26 from 7-9 pm. This event explores textile arts within queer history. Led by Cidnye Stott of DAC, participants will receive supplies and guidance to mend or transform clothing through patchwork and visible mending.
The Pease Park Conservancy will host a Pride Picnic at Pease Park on Saturday, June 29 from 10 am – 2 pm. The picnic will feature 30 local vendors, improv exercises, tie-dying activities, drag n’ draw sessions, a plant swap, friendship bracelet making stations, a yard swap area as well as food trucks and music provided by a DJ. Attendees can visit the Office of Sustainability table for sustainable swag.
