The City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department has issued its 2024 Annual Report, detailing efforts in areas such as flood management, erosion control, and water quality enhancements. Several key achievements are highlighted in the report.
The department worked to improve Austin’s Community Rating System score. This achievement has allowed residents to receive higher discounts, up to 25%, on federally-backed flood insurance policies. Additionally, the Little Bear Recharge Enhancement project began in 2024. This project aims to divert creek flows to a former quarry, which will contribute to recharging the Edward’s Aquifer. The intended benefit is to enhance groundwater sources to Barton Springs Pool, thus increasing the aquifer’s resilience to climate variations.
Another significant initiative included upgrades to the Flood Early Warning System, with new cameras and flashing beacons installed. These installations have been made to strengthen the city’s ability to respond to flood risks.
The department’s efforts are also organized around core missions. In terms of flooding, the team cleared 12.4 miles of creeks, channels, and ditches of debris, and installed or replaced 3,616 feet of storm drain infrastructure. The Waller Creek Tunnel efficiently managed 29 flood events by diverting water and removing 1,478 tons of debris.
In the realm of erosion control, the department stabilized 2,481 feet of eroding stream channels, an action that prevents property damage and aids in habitat restoration. Water quality saw advances with the removal of millions of gallons of pollutants from runoff, the repair of multiple water quality ponds, and improvements in water monitoring using the Environmental Integrity Index 2.0.
Reflecting on the year’s accomplishments, Jorge Morales, Director of the Watershed Protection Department, remarked, “Reflecting on the progress we’ve made guides our path forward. As we look ahead, we will build on these successes and continue serving the evolving needs of Austinites.”
