City of Austin Utilities has introduced a new cash payment option for its customers. This initiative, in collaboration with Paymentus, allows utility bills to be paid in cash at various local retailers without needing a bank account or credit card.

Customers can choose “cash” as their payment method on the Paymentus Quick Pay online portal. They will then receive a barcode via text or email, which can be scanned at participating stores such as CVS, Dollar General, Office Depot, and Walgreens. A convenience fee of $2.95 is charged for this service. Payments are processed immediately, even outside regular business hours.

Sandra Escobedo, Vice President of Customer Account Management at Austin Energy, said: “This new option provides added flexibility for customers who prefer to pay with cash.” She emphasized that the expanded hours and additional retail locations make it easier to keep up with utility payments.

Cash payments without a convenience fee are still accepted at Utility Customer Service Centers and through Western Union at H-E-B, Walmart, and Walgreens during limited service desk hours. However, the Paymentus option offers more flexibility by allowing payments at any register during store hours.

For example, customers can pay their bills late at night or on weekends by visiting a 24-hour Walgreens and having their payment posted immediately.
