The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department has collaborated with the Downtown Austin Alliance and the Austin Parks Foundation to introduce a new mural on the south-facing wall of the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium. This initiative marks a move towards increased programming and activities in the public plaza.
Titled “Generational Ties,” the mural celebrates the area’s rich cultural heritage. Created by Ruben Esquivel, an Austin-born artist recently voted Austin Chronicle’s Best Muralist 2024, the artwork intricately weaves together Indigenous heritage with Swedish roots.
The mural’s design prominently features two native women whose braids intertwine, symbolizing the transmission of wisdom and beauty across generations. The artwork is adorned with flora, fauna, and Sweden’s national flower, giktgräs, along with hummingbirds representing love, joy, and rebirth. A protective swallow and traditional Swedish textile patterns in the background further enhance its cultural significance.
Situated at the historic northwest corner of Congress Avenue and 10th Street in downtown Austin, the Old Bakery and Artisan Emporium provides a unique experience for visitors. It offers handmade items from local artisans and artworks by artists aged 50 and above. Additionally, its Visitor Center houses the Lundberg-Maerki Historical Collection that narrates Austin’s Swedish immigrant history.
