The Austin Police Department (APD) has released an update following the protest activities that occurred nationwide and locally in Austin on June 14, 2025. The department emphasized its commitment to transparency and public safety while sharing preliminary details about the events, including officer injuries, arrests, and future preparations.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and the community for maintaining peace during the protests. “I want to thank our Austin Police Department Officers and Texas Department of Public Safety partners for handling this event with professionalism, dedication and commitment,” said Davis. “I also want to thank our community for helping keep the evening peaceful. Through our coordinated efforts, we were all able to keep one another safe.”
The protest began at 5 p.m. at the Texas Capitol, where APD officers engaged in dialogue policing by interacting with attendees to promote safety and support peaceful assembly. Due to increased pedestrian traffic, several streets were closed, including Congress Avenue and sections of 11th Street.
Despite a largely peaceful demonstration, there were some disruptions as protesters moved through downtown Austin until nearly 11 p.m., even after dispersal requests from APD.
Preliminary data from Saturday’s protest indicated limited use of force by officers. Instances included a pepperball round used by one officer due to thrown objects and takedowns during arrests related to obstructing roadways or evading arrest.
Three individuals were arrested: Sanjay Ravigopal for obstructing passageways; Julien Glasse for obstructing passageways and evading arrest; Karrington Hardin for obstructing passageways.
Officer injuries included a knee injury during an arrest, a laser pointer incident affecting an officer’s eye without resulting in an arrest, and a hand injury during another arrest.
Looking ahead to potential future demonstrations, APD plans to maintain a visible police presence throughout the city. The department aims to ensure safety while leveraging technology for monitoring purposes. It reiterated support for peaceful protests but warned against illegal acts threatening public safety.
Participants in any future demonstrations are encouraged by APD to remain peaceful and report any suspicious behavior immediately by calling 9-1-1.
