The Austin Police Department (APD) has reported 39 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) during the Independence Day holiday weekend. The arrests occurred between the night of Wednesday, July 3, and the morning of Saturday, July 6.

The APD emphasizes that impaired driving is a persistent issue in the city, often escalating during holiday periods. “The safety of our community remains the top priority of the Austin Police Department,” an APD representative said. “Each impaired driver removed from the roadway represents one less threat to the lives of others.”

While enforcement is crucial, APD stresses that it is not sufficient on its own. The department collaborates with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department to increase awareness about the dangers and illegality of driving under the influence.

APD encourages residents and visitors to make responsible decisions when consuming alcohol by using ride-share services, public transportation, or a designated driver. “Together, we can help keep Austin’s roads safe, during the holidays and every day,” they added.
