On September 10, 2025, the Austin Police Department (APD) Auto Theft Unit, in cooperation with the Cedar Park Police Department and the Austin Independent School District (AISD) Police Department, arrested two juvenile males following an investigation into stolen firearms. The investigation began after officers obtained photographs of a suspect holding several firearms taken during an attempted auto theft at 6315 Thurgood Avenue. Some of these weapons were regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA) and are restricted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Police used investigative tools and eyewitness accounts to confirm that the photos were taken within Austin city limits. This led detectives to obtain a search warrant for one suspect’s residence. During the search, officers recovered eight firearms from a bedroom. The items included silencers and short-barreled rifles.

Detectives secured three arrest warrants for Possession of Prohibited Weapons against the main suspect. Further interviews identified a second suspect, resulting in four additional warrants for similar charges.

Both juveniles were on probation for prior offenses at the time of their arrest. They were booked into Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center without incident.

The APD encourages anyone with information related to this case to submit tips anonymously through Capital Area Crime Stoppers at https://www.austincrimestoppers.org/ or by calling 512-472-8477.
