The Austin Police Department (APD) is collaborating with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes through high-visibility traffic enforcement. This initiative, titled “Operation Slow Down,” began on July 18 and will run until August 3, 2025.

Speeding is a significant concern in Texas, contributing to nearly 160,000 traffic crashes in 2024 alone. These incidents resulted in 1,467 fatalities and 5,921 serious injuries. The APD and TxDOT are urging drivers to slow down as speeding increases the risk of severe accidents and can lead to expensive fines, court costs, and higher insurance premiums.

Law enforcement agencies across Texas are intensifying efforts to enforce speed limits during this operation. Officers will be more visible on the roads, issuing tickets and reminding motorists about the dangers of speeding.

Drivers are advised to adjust their speed according to road conditions and maintain a safe distance when stopping. It is crucial to watch for road signs indicating reduced speed limits and remember that fines double in school zones or work zones when workers are present. TxDOT also emphasizes the importance of wearing seat belts at all times.

“Speeding doesn’t save time; it costs lives,” highlights the initiative’s core message.
