Austin Police investigate scooter-related traffic fatality at W. 5th and Rio Grande

Austin Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred at the intersection of West 5th Street and Rio Grande Street on November 15, 2025. The incident took place at approximately 1:29 a.m., involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian riding a scooter.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, was not impaired, and cooperated with investigators. The pedestrian, identified as Alexander William Gonzalo, was transported to a hospital but died the following day.

“This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 84th fatal crash of 2025, resulting in 88 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2024, 78 fatal crashes resulted in 83 deaths. These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.”
