Austin police investigate fatal collision on North Mopac Expressway

Austin police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at approximately 9:07 a.m. The incident took place in the southbound lanes of the 8100 block of North Mopac Expressway.

According to authorities, two vehicles were involved in the crash. One driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The other driver, identified as Jonhatan Rodriguez, a Hispanic male born on May 19, 2006, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:27 a.m.

Vehicular homicide detectives processed the scene and interviewed witnesses. Preliminary findings suggest that the collision involved a rear-end impact between two vehicles traveling southbound. Investigators believe that Rodriguez’s fatal injuries were consistent with trauma sustained during the crash.

“This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 88th fatal crash of 2025, resulting in 92 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2024, 87 fatal crashes resulted in 90 deaths. These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.”
