Austin police investigate city’s 20th homicide of 2024; seek public assistance

The Austin Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation following an incident that occurred on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in the 700 block of West William Cannon Drive. The deceased has been identified as Aristeo Campos-Cuellar.

According to the police report, at approximately 11:04 p.m., officers responded to a Check Welfare call for a man who was bleeding. Upon arrival, they found a male on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 7:13 a.m.

Homicide detectives and Crime Scene Specialists were called to process the scene and interview witnesses. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had just arrived at an apartment complex with another companion when he was shot by an unknown suspect who subsequently fled the area.

As detectives continue their active investigation into this case, they are urging anyone with any information to come forward. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for any information leading to an arrest.
