On August 7, 2024, Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a welfare check at 4312 Acropolis Court. Upon arrival, they found Ryan Luper unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at 11:01 p.m. Crime Scene Specialists processed the scene, and the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Luper died from “toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.”

The APD’s Narcotics Support Unit took over the investigation, which led to an arrest warrant for Stephen Tamayo on a murder charge. Tamayo is currently in custody in Williamson County on an unrelated charge.

This marks the fourth murder charge filed by the Narcotics Support Unit since state legislation in 2023 made supplying fentanyl resulting in death a criminal offense. The case is being investigated as Austin’s 72nd homicide of 2024.
