The Austin Police Department (APD) has unveiled a comprehensive five-year strategic plan, aiming to chart the course for the department’s success in the coming years. The development of this plan began in 2022 and incorporated input from various internal and external stakeholders, including both civilian and sworn personnel of all ranks and divisions.

The plan was formulated through staff-led collaboration, community engagement, investment, and holistic understanding. A total of 19 APD staff listening sessions were held along with community input sessions. An online survey was also conducted to gather further feedback.

Interim Chief Robin J. Henderson expressed confidence in the new strategic plan. “I am confident the Austin Police Department Strategic Plan 2024-2029, APD and our community have developed together will provide us with a clear roadmap to achieve our goals and fulfill our mission,” he said. He emphasized that all feedback received played a crucial role in shaping future accomplishments and fostering continuous improvements.

The strategic plan includes five focus areas: Protecting Austin; Engaging the Community; Developing the Workforce; Fostering Leadership Excellence; Enhancing Organizational Capacity. Each focus area contains three to five high-level objectives designed to achieve desired outcomes.

Additionally, each goal is supported by two to four strategies which will be further developed into action plans. Measures are also being developed to assess progress towards achieving these goals, providing quantifiable benchmarks that help track APD’s performance, evaluate outcomes, and ensure accountability throughout the implementation process.
