Austin Police arrested four individuals in connection with two separate vehicle burglary incidents that occurred at local parks in July and August 2025.

On July 16, officers responded to reports of a group breaking into vehicles at Zilker Metropolitan Park. Witnesses reported several vehicles had been broken into, and the suspects left the scene in a silver Hyundai. Officers located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, recovering stolen property belonging to one of the victims. Taleja Jenkins, 26, and Deshauna Penson, 28, were arrested for burglary of a vehicle and related offenses.

In a separate incident on August 7, members of APD’s North Metro Tactical Response Unit carried out a proactive enforcement operation at Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve as well as Covert Park at Mount Bonnell. Officers observed occupants of a vehicle acting suspiciously by peeking into parked cars at Mayfield Park. The suspects moved their car several times within the parking area before leaving. Officers followed them and witnessed reckless driving behavior before conducting a traffic stop. Randy Council, 34, was arrested for reckless driving and attempted burglary of a motor vehicle; Trayvon Swain, 26, was also arrested for attempted burglary.

The Austin Police Department stated it will continue proactive measures in city parks to address such crimes. The department shared safety tips with the community: lock doors and windows even during short absences; keep valuables out of sight or take them along; park in well-lit areas; consider anti-theft devices; remain aware of surroundings; and report suspicious activity.

“The Austin Police Department will continue to implement proactive measures in Austin parks. APD wants to share some tips with the community to help avoid becoming victims of vehicle burglaries:

1. Always Lock Your Doors: Ensure that your vehicle doors and windows are secure and locked, even if you are only leaving for a short period of time.

2. Hide Valuables: Keep any valuables out of sight, or better yet, take them with you. Items such as bags, electronics, and even loose change can attract unwanted attention.

3. Park in Well-Lit Areas: Whenever possible, park in well-lit, populated areas. Thieves are less likely to target vehicles in locations with high visibility and foot traffic.

4. Use Anti-Theft Devices: Consider investing in steering wheel locks, alarms, or GPS tracking devices to deter potential thieves.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings when parking or returning to your vehicle, and report any suspicious activity.”
