The Austin Parks and Recreation Department reported on Mar. 10 that its Land Management Program completed wildfire mitigation and ecological restoration treatments across 520 acres in 22 parks during fiscal year 2025. The program, staffed by four full-time employees, is responsible for planning, overseeing, and implementing large-scale fuel mitigation projects as well as routine maintenance.

Wildfire mitigation remains a central focus for the department as it works to reduce fire risk and restore natural areas. The current land management plan, approved by the Austin City Council in September 2023, guides these efforts to provide ecosystem services to the Austin area.

The department’s work included mechanical fuel reduction, selective thinning for forest health, invasive species removal, prescribed burns, planting and seeding activities, along with several volunteer-led projects. These initiatives are part of ongoing strategies to protect parklands and support community safety.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department promotes community health through active lifestyles and equitable access to outdoor spaces, according to the official website. It manages more than 300 parks and maintains over 20,000 acres of parkland according to the official website.

In addition to land management activities, the department operates facilities such as pools, golf courses, and recreation centers according to the official website. It also provides recreation programs, nature-based activities, and cultural events designed to enhance community health and outdoor access according to the official website.

As part of the City of Austin government according to the official website, the department continues its commitment to managing public lands for both safety and enjoyment.
