The Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) has created a fundraising effort to help those affected by the storms in Kentucky. The organization plans to send care kits and raise money to donate to those who suffered devastating losses during the storm.
The ADRN said it is accepting blankets, toiletries and propane heaters to help those in need be protected from frigid temperatures.
“There are so many devastating stories coming out of Kentucky in the aftermath of the tornadoes this weekend,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said on his Twitter account. “The losses are unthinkable. If you would like to send help to the area, please visit https://adrn.org/heartland.”
Kentucky, along with seven other states, was devastated by a line of tornados that wiped out homes, businesses and schools. At least 77 were killed in Kentucky, and the death toll might rise.
“When I looked at the TV this morning and saw the Disaster Relief was sending out for these people, I just said to myself, they need it more than I do,” said DeNese Lara, one of the volunteers with ADRN told Fox 7.
“When you lose it all, even the most basic essentials can be helpful. Inside a typical care kit would be personal hygiene items whether it be deodorant or shampoo, Clorox disinfectant wipes, those types of things,” ADRN Associate Director Stephen Brewer said.
Donors can either make an individual female or male care kit, or they can create one for a family with babies, too. Families will need blankets, toiletries and in some instances, propane heaters, as the temperatures start to dip. Donors can fill a plastic bin with the items and label a piece of foot-long gray duct tape with what kind of care kit you’ve made.
