Superintendent Matias Segura of the Austin Independent School District announced on Apr. 26 that the district will suspend any further school closures while it works to stabilize its operations and focus on districtwide boundary adjustments.

The decision comes as the district continues budget discussions and prepares for enrollment in the 2026-27 school year. The move aims to address concerns from families about uncertainty surrounding potential cuts and closures, while supporting student achievement and minimizing disruptions. Segura said, “By narrowing our focus to districtwide boundary work, we can continue working toward building aligned feeder patterns and strengthening neighborhood schools while limiting continued disruptions. These aligned patterns offer an opportunity to build communities, improve programmatic alignment, and reduce the number of times a student cohort splits into different schools. Ultimately, this work maximizes our resources and strengthens the academic experience across Austin ISD.”

Segura also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve outcomes for students at campuses with state-approved Turnaround Plans as well as continued support for students receiving special education services. The superintendent emphasized that stabilizing the budget remains a priority alongside supporting families affected by past consolidations, boosting enrollment initiatives, and advancing projects under the 2022 Bond program.

The Austin Independent School District educates more than 72,000 students with over 5,000 classroom teachers across its diverse school communities according to the official website. The district operates 116 campuses including elementary, middle, high schools as well as early college programs, academies, magnet options, alternative settings and community schools according to the official website. With instruction provided in more than 100 languages—and programs offered in eleven languages other than English—the district supports a multicultural environment where over one hundred languages are spoken by students according to the official website.

According to its official site the Austin Independent School District maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent—surpassing state averages on SAT and ACT scores—and partners with families and community members so students are equipped for success in college or careers.

Looking ahead, Segura said previous drafts will serve as starting points for renewed boundary discussions. A series of public meetings is scheduled throughout May and June—including kickoff events on May 11 and May 16—followed by area-specific workshops later in June both virtually and at locations yet to be determined. Preliminary recommendations are expected early in fall after feedback is gathered during these sessions.

“Thank you for your continued dedication to making Austin ISD a place where every student can thrive,” Segura said.
