Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) Superintendent Matias Segura has issued an apology to families following a police incident that occurred Wednesday in the Barton Hills community. The district acknowledged gaps in communication during the event and outlined steps being taken to improve safety protocols.
In a message to families, Segura said, “Most importantly, I deeply apologize for the stress and fear that we undoubtedly contributed to this week. Our top priority at Austin ISD is the safety of our students. We exist to educate, but we cannot fulfill that purpose without ensuring the safety of every child and staff member in our care.”
Segura explained that during critical incidents, Austin ISD works closely with campus staff and district police to share real-time information from those on site. He commended school principals for their leadership during the situation: “Your principals led this effort with integrity and strength to keep families safe and I’m grateful for their leadership.”
The superintendent admitted current procedures did not adequately address periods when students are arriving or leaving school—times described as “critical transition times.” As a result, Austin ISD will review its protocols to better account for potential threats during these transitions.
“We are committed to learning from this experience and improving our systems. We are already in communication with the City of Austin and the Austin Police Department to strengthen our relationship and protocols,” Segura stated.
Counselors remain available at schools for students and staff needing support after the incident. The counseling department has also provided resources for parents who wish to discuss recent events with their children.
“Again, I apologize for the confusion and stress you and your children experienced. Your trust is important to us, and we are taking every step to ensure that our procedures are as strong as they can be,” Segura concluded.
