September marks Attendance Awareness Month, a national campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of regular student attendance for academic success. According to Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD), consistent school attendance is closely connected to students’ academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and future outcomes.
District officials emphasize that skills such as responsibility and time management are fostered through steady attendance. They also note that being present in school allows students to build relationships with peers and teachers, contributing to a sense of belonging and supporting mental and emotional well-being.
Austin ISD reported its largest increase in attendance rates between the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years, rising from 91.35% to 92.41%. This 1.06% improvement led to more than $4.5 million in additional funding for the district. State education funding is determined by student attendance levels; higher regular attendance brings increased financial resources that can be invested in educational programs and student support services.
The district states: “Austin ISD is working to collaborate with families and community partners to support positive student outcomes through great attendance. When students are consistently in class, they are not only keeping up with lessons but also engaging in the vital social interactions that are a key part of a successful school experience.”
