Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) has announced the release of a new tool designed to guide its work on school consolidations, boundary changes, transfer policies, and programming. The announcement marks what Superintendent Matias Segura described as “an important milestone in our work to build a stronger Austin ISD for every student.”

The development of this tool involved collaboration with the district’s board of trustees and input from more than 15,000 community members. “I am deeply grateful for the time and care so many of you have invested to help us get to this point,” Segura said.

Segura addressed concerns about possible school closures, stating: “I want to emphasize that this is not a list of schools that are closing. It’s a starting point to understand where things aren’t lining up, like enrollment, building conditions or program placement, so we can plan for stronger, healthier schools across Austin ISD.”

He outlined the district’s vision: “Our vision is simple but powerful: every family should have an excellent neighborhood school, one that is vibrant, well-resourced and able to meet the needs of every child. To make that a reality, we have to be thoughtful about how we use our resources. Right now, we’re serving fewer students than we did nearly 30 years ago, but we’re operating more schools than ever. That spreads us too thin and limits what we can offer each campus.”

Segura explained that consolidation is part of a broader strategy aimed at reinvesting in academic programs, teachers, facilities and support services for students’ success.

“Over the next two months, we’ll take a closer look at each campus and explore a range of options, like adjusting school boundaries, moving programs, revising transfer policies or consolidating schools where it makes sense. Proposed changes will be presented to the Board of Trustees on Oct. 9, and the earliest any changes would occur is the 2026–27 school year,” he said.

Community members are encouraged to review Data Rubric scores related to consolidation and boundary change processes on the district’s website and submit questions or ideas through available channels.

“Thank you for being part of this process and for your commitment to our students and schools. Together, we can build the healthy, vibrant schools our children need to thrive now and for generations to come,” Segura concluded.
