The Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) has issued a message to its community regarding recent immigration enforcement activities in Central Texas. Superintendent Matias Segura addressed concerns about the impact of these developments on students and families, emphasizing the district’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment.
“We are closely following reports of immigration enforcement activity in Central Texas and would like to remind you of our policies and practices as we provide safe, supportive and inclusive learning environments for our families and staff,” Segura stated. “We understand that the recent news cycles have affected members of our community in a deeply personal way. In Austin ISD we are committed to serving all students and families, regardless of immigration status.”
Segura explained that last year, the district developed guidance for staff on how to discuss sensitive topics related to immigration with both students and adults. The district is now sharing these resources again with campus staff to ensure employees can support students effectively. “We are lifting up these resources and sharing them again with our campus staff to ensure all Austin ISD employees can confidently support our students,” he said.
He also noted that while processes were established in early 2025, law enforcement practices may have changed since then. The district remains committed to adapting its protocols as needed: “This includes connecting directly with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement to understand their policies and practices and adjusting our protocols as needed to support our community.”
Segura reaffirmed Austin ISD’s stance: “Austin ISD remains a district where every student belongs. We are committed to fostering trust and ensuring that our schools are places where families feel protected and respected.”
Austin ISD serves more than 72,000 students across 116 school communities, employing over 5,000 classroom teachers. The district supports a multicultural environment where more than 100 languages are spoken by students, offering instruction in 11 languages besides English. It maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent—above state averages—and works with families and the broader community to prepare students for college, careers, and life (official website).
Founded in 1881, Austin ISD ranks among the eight largest school districts in Texas (official website). It operates various types of schools including elementary, middle, high schools as well as specialized academies (official website).
Superintendent Segura concluded his message by thanking the community for its continued support.
