The Austin Independent School District (Austin ISD) has announced several updates and initiatives for the week of January 23, 2026.

According to the district, it has achieved zero overdue special education evaluations. The district attributes this improvement to a move toward employment-based staffing and proactive scheduling. Plans are in place to maintain compliance through ongoing workload audits and collaboration with the Texas Education Agency.

Wooten Elementary School recently held its grand opening following renovations funded by the 2022 Bond. The updated campus now includes state-of-the-art early childhood classrooms, new collaboration zones, and a modernized library.

The African American Heritage Committee has extended the deadline for its Spoken Word Poetry Contest. All Austin ISD students in grades 3 through 12 are eligible to submit entries by February 6 at 5:00 PM. Winners will be recognized on February 27, 2026, at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center.

Texas public schools will observe Holocaust Remembrance Week from January 26 through January 30. This initiative is intended to educate students about the Holocaust and other genocides as a way to combat hatred and prevent future atrocities.

Families of Gifted & Talented or Talent Explore students can attend virtual information sessions hosted by the district on January 28 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and January 29 from noon to 1:00 PM. Links for these online sessions are available on the Austin ISD Calendar page.

Austin ISD is one of Texas’s largest school districts, established in 1881, serving more than 72,000 students across 116 diverse school communities.
