Superintendent Matias Segura has provided further information regarding the Austin Independent School District’s updated school consolidation and boundary change plan. A portion of the plan, originally scheduled for a vote this month, will be postponed to allow more time for community input.

During a Board Information Session on November 6, Segura explained that adjustments have been made to the districtwide boundary, consolidation, and enrollment balancing efforts. The timeline has been revised so that major decisions will take place after the initial vote in order to better consider feedback from families and stakeholders.

“These are decisions that impact student access, program quality, and district sustainability for generations to come. The refined path gives more time for constructive input and clearer deliverables,” Segura said.

The upcoming board vote will focus on school consolidations and reassignments specifically for campuses requiring state-mandated turnaround plans, as well as the relocation of districtwide dual language programs. Student reassignments will be determined based on home addresses and available space at nearby schools. Current attendance boundaries will remain unchanged by these reassignments. As planning continues, some details may still be adjusted before finalization.

Administrators are continuing to review possible changes to attendance boundaries and are also considering proposed closures of Palm, Bryker Wood, and Maplewood elementary schools in the coming months.

District leaders intend to keep meeting with affected communities prior to finalizing any plans next week. Key dates in the process include:

– November 12: Final day for submitting comment card feedback.
– November 14: Release of the updated plan and draft policy updates by administration.
– November 20: Public hearing followed by board actions on program changes, policy updates, and state-required turnaround plans.

Segura emphasized that the extended timeline is designed “to fully consider community feedback” before making lasting decisions about school assignments and programming.
