Teachers in the Austin Independent School District (ISD) are prioritizing mental health by incorporating mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and yoga into their classrooms. This initiative is part of a district pilot program that was launched in January. The program trained 30 teachers across 10 campuses to focus on student mental health and share their learnings with fellow staff members. The aim is to expand this initiative to an additional 10 campuses.

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, and Austin ISD is committed to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health while fostering a supportive environment for both students and staff. Programs such as Breathe for Change, which offers a 200-hour certification for teachers, are instrumental in promoting holistic care for students and educators alike.

Cowan Elementary School Teacher Devon Whipple shared her experience with the program: “[Breathe for Change] has transformed my teaching and relationships across the campus,” she said. “I think taking care of ourselves as teachers is so important and when we’re not taking care of ourselves, we can’t take care of our students.”
