Austin Independent School District (ISD) is facing a challenging situation due to the federal government’s extended review of grants. The district has announced a potential loss of over $9 million in federal funding, which will impact various programs.

On June 30, Austin ISD was informed that certain funds typically disbursed on July 1 are currently on hold with no indication of when or if they will be available. These funds are part of federal formula and discretionary grant programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), supporting instructional quality, student achievement, and equitable access to education.

The absence of these funds presents a challenge for Austin ISD, as it already grapples with an ongoing budget deficit and decreasing fund balance. Without alternative funding sources for these programs or staff, the district will need to consider how to move forward without these resources.

Programs affected include multilingual support and after-school activities. These initiatives help create engaging learning environments where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Despite this setback, Austin ISD remains committed to its values and dedication to its students.

“We believe every student deserves a high-quality education that affirms their identity,” stated Superintendent Matias Segura. “We believe in the power of bilingualism and biliteracy.”

The district acknowledges that service delivery must evolve due to the financial constraints. It plans to evaluate remaining resources carefully, possibly restructuring some programs or consolidating efforts while ensuring transparency and collaboration during this transition.

Superintendent Segura expressed gratitude for continued community support: “These are difficult times, but I believe in the strength of this community.”
