The Austin Independent School District announced on May 15 that it will extend its budget planning timeline in order to further review options for necessary budget cuts. Superintendent Matias Segura said the decision follows feedback from both the community and the board, which highlighted areas requiring deeper examination.

The extension is intended to ensure that any draft proposal is thorough and fiscally responsible. Segura said, “We are committed to exploring every possible option to limit the strain these necessary cuts will place on our campuses. This extra window ensures that our draft proposal is as thorough as possible and reflects a fiscally responsible path forward for our district.”

Segura acknowledged the uncertainty caused by this delay, particularly for staff members who are awaiting answers about their future. “I recognize that this extended period of uncertainty takes an emotional toll. To our staff, I apologize for the fact that you are headed into another weekend with uncertainty. I know how much you care about your students and colleagues, and I understand that waiting for these answers is difficult,” he said.

He also thanked families for their patience during this process: “To our families, thank you for your continued patience as we navigate these complex financial decisions; our priority remains protecting the student experience as much as possible.” The leadership team will continue working over the coming days to prioritize resources supporting classrooms while reviewing administrative and operational areas for efficiencies.

The Austin Independent School District educates more than 72,000 students across 116 school communities—including elementary, middle, high schools, early college programs, academies, magnet schools, alternative campuses and community schools—and employs over 5,000 classroom teachers in a multicultural environment where more than 100 languages are spoken by students according to the official website.

An update on progress is expected next week. Segura concluded his message by saying: “Thank you for your dedication to our students and for your understanding during this challenging time.”
