Two teachers from the Austin Independent School District were recognized on May 8 at the statewide 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Megan Vasquez of Becker Elementary received the Leadership Award, while Alasin DeVeny of Joslin Elementary was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The awards highlight outstanding contributions by public school professionals across Texas. The recognition brings attention to the work of educators and their impact on local communities.

Vasquez was awarded $10,000 for herself and a $10,000 grant for her school. DeVeny received $25,000 personally and a $25,000 grant for her campus. The press release stated that awards were given to six teachers, two counselors, two principals, one early childhood facility, one public school board and two school districts.

Nominations for next year’s awards are now open to all state-certified public school professionals currently working in Texas. “Teachers, counselors, principals, early childhood centers, school boards and districts can win cash prizes for their outstanding work. Nominations will close on September 30, 2026,” according to the announcement.

The Austin Independent School District educates more than 72,000 students and employs over 5,000 classroom teachers across diverse communities; it supports a multicultural environment with over 100 languages spoken by students and provides instruction in more than 100 languages with programs in eleven languages other than English. The district operates 116 schools—including elementary through high schools as well as magnet and alternative campuses—and maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent while exceeding state averages on SAT and ACT scores; it also focuses on partnering with families and the community to equip students with knowledge and skills needed for success in college or career according to the official website.

As nominations remain open until September’s deadline this year, organizers encourage community members to recognize outstanding educators making an impact throughout Texas.
