All Austin Independent School District (AISD) schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 27. This closure includes the cancellation of all extracurricular activities and athletic events.

The district stated, “Decisions like these are never easy because we know our students do best when they’re in school. However, when faced with the choice between a normal schedule and the physical safety of our students, families and staff, we will always choose safety.”

AISD officials explained that the decision was made after consulting real-time data from local weather and transportation experts. Factors contributing to the closure include hazardous driving conditions in shaded and elevated areas that may worsen overnight due to refreezing, significant ice accumulation around school facilities after several days of building closures, and staffing shortages caused by closures in neighboring districts where many AISD employees reside.

The district added, “We will continue to monitor conditions and share an update regarding Wednesday’s schedule no later than 3 p.m. tomorrow.”

Families who rely on school meals are encouraged to seek assistance through community resources such as Central Texas Food Bank, United Way for Greater Austin – ConnectATX, or Texas Health and Human Services by calling 2-1-1 or (877) 541-7905.

Austin ISD serves more than 72,000 students across 116 diverse school communities with over 5,000 classroom teachers. The district offers education in multiple languages and maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent according to its official website. Established in 1881, AISD is one of the largest public education systems in Texas.

The district concluded its message by thanking families for their flexibility and patience during this period.
