All Austin Independent School District (AISD) schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 26, due to expected extreme temperatures and hazardous road conditions. The decision follows reports from local meteorologists and field crews indicating that unsafe road conditions are likely to persist well into Monday.
The district warned that even if some areas appear to improve during the day, freezing overnight temperatures could create dangerous ice patches throughout the city. Community members are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remember that “passable” roads do not guarantee safety.
“Austin ISD will continue to monitor the weather and receive updates from the National Weather Service,” according to the district’s announcement.
Families and staff are encouraged to stay informed by visiting the district’s official website or following its social media channels for real-time updates. Information about winter weather safety and specific route monitoring is also available online.
Austin ISD manages 116 diverse school communities in Texas, serving more than 72,000 students with over 5,000 classroom teachers. The district supports a multicultural environment where more than 100 languages are spoken by students and offers programs in 11 languages besides English. AISD maintains a graduation rate of 93.3 percent, exceeding state averages on standardized tests, as reported on its official website.
The district partners with families and the community to prepare students for success in college, careers, and life. Established in 1881, AISD ranks among the eight largest school districts in Texas.
“Based on reports from our local meteorologist and crews out in the field, we expect that road conditions will continue to be unsafe well into the day Monday. Though conditions may appear to improve throughout the day in some areas, freezing temperatures overnight could lead to dangerous ice patches across the city.”
“The guidance remains to limit all unnecessary travel and to keep in mind that ‘passable’ roads do not mean they’re safe.”
