The Austin Independent School District (AISD) is marking the start of Black History Month with a Pan-African Flag-raising ceremony at Akins High School on Monday, February 2. This event launches a series of activities and observances throughout the district.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has approved 22 out of 24 district transformation plans without requiring changes. According to the district, this move “affirms the school improvement work already underway.” For Widén and Winn Elementary schools, AISD is working to provide additional information about student support and funding, with a resubmission deadline set for the end of March.
Academic data from Dobie, Burnet, and Webb Middle Schools indicate progress in student outcomes. The district is considering possible partnerships under Section 1882 of state law. These partnerships could bring extra funding to these campuses and pause state sanctions for two years. A board vote on these recommendations is expected in mid-to-late February.
Families planning for the next school year should note key deadlines: Round 1 applications for admissions-based and magnet programs close on February 6. Round 2 and general transfer applications open on February 16, while Pre-K applications begin April 1.
AISD manages 116 diverse school communities across elementary, middle, high, early college, academy, magnet, alternative, and community schools. It serves more than 72,000 students with over 5,000 classroom teachers. The district provides instruction in more than 100 languages and offers programs in 11 languages besides English. With a graduation rate of 93.3 percent that exceeds state averages on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, AISD works with families and the community to prepare students for college, careers, and life (official website).
