The Austin Independent School District announced on April 13 that it will celebrate Earth Week from April 20 to May 1, offering a range of educational and environmental activities for students, teachers, and staff. The district encourages the community to reflect on ways to improve the planet and participate in actions that support sustainability.

Earth Week is important as it provides an opportunity for students to learn about environmental stewardship through hands-on experiences. Activities planned include Creative Learning Initiative projects integrating dance, visual art, drama, and music; daily read-alouds focusing on nature; eco-poetry challenges aligned with National Poetry Month; STEM lessons developed in partnership with EcoRise; outdoor BioBlitz events; an Earth Art Competition using natural materials; opportunities to pursue Green Flag certification through the Eco-Schools program; and an Earth Day Bingo game available in English and Spanish.

The district highlights its ongoing commitment to sustainability by reporting more than 13,000 tons of waste diverted through composting and recycling at all schools. Since 2017, over 15,500 trees have been inventoried and more than 1,400 native trees planted since 2021. Austin ISD is also on track to certify 64 green and healthy buildings by the end of 2028. In addition, thirty-eight schools included sustainability goals in their Campus Improvement Plans for the upcoming school year while twenty campuses are working toward Eco-School Certification from the National Wildlife Federation.

Austin ISD supports a multicultural environment with over one hundred languages spoken by students according to the official website. The district operates one hundred sixteen diverse school communities including elementary, middle, high school programs as well as early college academies and magnet schools according to the official website. It educates more than seventy-two thousand students across these campuses while employing over five thousand classroom teachers according to the official website.

Instruction is provided in more than one hundred languages with programs offered in eleven languages other than English according to the official website. The district maintains a graduation rate of ninety-three point three percent and exceeds state averages on SAT and ACT scores according to the official website. Austin ISD focuses on partnering with families and community members so that students are equipped for success after graduation according to the official website.

Community members are encouraged during Earth Week (April 18-22) to share their activities via Twitter or Instagram using @AustinISDGreen #AISDGreen.
