Austin and Travis County residents are facing heightened risks of heat, wildfire, and flash flooding this summer. In response, Austin’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) is organizing an Emergency Preparedness Pop-Up event at the Yarborough Branch Library on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. This initiative is part of a monthly series held in each City Council District throughout the year on the third Wednesday of each month.

“If you are paying attention to our neighbors in Houston you may be seeing the challenges they are facing – days until power can be restored, debris clean up, flood damage, gas shortages, and the toll disasters take on our mental health,” said Interim HSEM Director Bill Wilson. “Now is the time to ask yourself ‘if this happened to me would I be prepared?’ We host events like these to teach our community how to be resilient during disasters. Don’t wait to plan or get your home stocked with supplies.”

Representatives from HSEM along with other City departments and partners in emergency response will be present to provide tips, information, and supplies. The first 25 guests will receive an emergency supply kit, limited to one per household.

For Central Texas community members, HSEM’s Emergency Preparedness Pop-Ups offer an opportunity to learn about preparedness before emergencies strike and stock up on free supplies. The Basic Emergency Preparedness Kits include items valued over $100 such as backpacks, lanterns, glow sticks, personal cooling supplies, battery-powered chargers, NOAA weather radios, Neighborhood Preparedness Guides, and items for kids and pets. Given the range of hazards in Central Texas, it is crucial for community members to know what actions to take before, during, and after a disaster.
