Austin FC’s Q2 Stadium has achieved Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) pre-certification, making it the first soccer-specific stadium in the world to receive this recognition. The announcement was made by Austin FC on Green Sports Day, highlighting Q2 Stadium’s commitment to implementing sustainable practices and policies.

According to Austin FC, the TRUE certification process has been guided by credentialed TRUE Advisors from Okapi Environmental Services. Their expertise has played a crucial role in helping Q2 Stadium through the certification process.

Since its inauguration, Q2 Stadium has been dedicated to reducing waste. The staff has implemented measures such as the use of compostable packaging and flatware at concession areas, resulting in a remarkable 75% diversion of waste generated at the stadium over the first two-and-a-half seasons. This effort is part of Austin FC’s Go Verde! The Sustainability Platform, presented by YETI. The platform also includes the installation of YETI Hydration Stations, which have prevented over 50,000 plastic water bottles from being used during the 2023 season alone.

“Sustainability was an integral part of Q2 Stadium’s design, and it continues to be a top priority as we strive to make the venue a home that Austinites can enjoy for years to come,” said Austin FC President Andy Loughnane. “It’s an honor to receive this recognition for the stadium’s commitment to achieving zero waste.”

To further enhance their sustainability initiatives, Austin FC engages in a meticulous process of hand-sorting waste generated during matches and other stadium events. This helps increase the amount of materials diverted from landfills. Austin FC collaborates with partners Texas Disposal Systems (TDS) and ABM to continuously improve waste diversion strategies at Q2 Stadium. TDS has even introduced a team of volunteer “Trash Goalies” who interact with fans to ensure proper waste disposal, making a significant impact on sustainability.

The guidance of credentialed TRUE Advisors from Okapi Environmental Services has been pivotal in advancing Q2 Stadium’s journey toward TRUE certification. Austin FC acknowledges their contribution in achieving this recognition.

Q2 Stadium’s achievement of TRUE pre-certification sets a new standard for soccer stadiums worldwide. It showcases Austin FC’s dedication to sustainability and serves as an inspiration for other sports venues to prioritize eco-friendly practices.
