The City of Austin has extended the deadline for its Flood Insurance Assistance Program, a partnership with the Del Valle Community Coalition. The initiative aims to help homeowners in high-risk flood areas by offering up to $2,000 in financial support to obtain or maintain flood insurance for one year.

To qualify, applicants must own their home within the 100-year floodplain, have a household income at or below 140% of the Median Family Income, and use the funds for a new or renewed flood insurance policy. Applications can be submitted through the Del Valle Community Coalition website at ATXdvcc.org/flood until January 31, 2026. Funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and paid directly to insurance companies.

Because Austin is part of both the National Flood Insurance Program and FEMA’s Community Rating System, residents are eligible for federally backed flood insurance at discounts of up to 25%. While the average annual premium in Austin is $670, policies for homes in designated floodplains often exceed $1,000 per year.

Flood damage is not typically covered by standard homeowner policies. The average cost of a flood insurance claim in Austin was $21,000 as of 2021. Homeowners without specific flood coverage remain responsible for repair costs unless federal assistance becomes available after major disasters.

“Austin Watershed Protection protects lives, property and the environment of our community by reducing the impact of flooding, erosion, and water pollution,” according to information from Austin Watershed Protection.

Del Valle Community Coalition describes itself as “a charitable organization that defends human and civil rights in underprivileged and under-served communities by fostering an environment where a coalition of our community works to cultivate a pipeline of engaged and empowered citizens that will pursue proactive solutions to community challenges when working with City and County leaders.”

Austin Housing says it “creates and preserves housing opportunities to stabilize communities.”
