Austin City Manager T.C. Broadnax has provided an update on the search for a new Chief of Police, emphasizing the importance of the position and the need for thorough consideration.

Broadnax, who assumed his role in May, stated that identifying a permanent police chief for Austin was a top priority. The city administration has been working diligently to find suitable candidates while also seeking community input on the desired qualities in a Chief of Police.

“We worked diligently to find the best candidates possible and to provide our community members with the opportunity to tell us what qualities they wanted to see in a Chief of Police and provide their feedback as we narrowed the field,” Broadnax said. He is currently reviewing this feedback along with input from stakeholder interview panels and the City Council.

Given the critical nature of this position, Broadnax has decided not to request a special called meeting on July 30 to confirm a new police chief. “This position is too critical to our Police Department, the City organization as a whole, and this community to rush,” he explained. Broadnax intends to take additional time to consider two highly qualified candidates before making a final decision.
