Austin City Council voted to approve the purchase of the former Salvation Army Downtown Shelter at 501 E. 8th St.at its Nov. 9 meeting. The city hopes the purchase will help fill the need for shelter beds for individuals experiencing homelessness.
Gray stated that the upkeep of this shelter showcases the city’s dedication and obligation towards building a society where no one remains homeless, as outlined in a press release.
The city revealed that the acquisition includes a retail storefront property at 718 Red River Street and a surface parking lot at 700 Red River Street. Since its inauguration in 1988, the shelter has consistently provided approximately 130 beds for those without homes. According to an announcement, Salvation Army initially intended to close down this facility in March; however, collaboration with the municipality allowed it to keep its doors open until Apr.15, ensuring ample time for its clients to find other accommodations.
Finally, an official statement affirmed that this purchase would contribute towards fulfilling the requirement for around 1,000 shelter beds by the end of Dec.2025.
