This week, the City of Austin initiated construction on an extension of the Shoal Creek Trail in North Austin. The new segment will stretch from the US 183 frontage road to Burnet Road, covering a distance of 0.75 miles along Longhorn Boulevard and Neils Thompson Drive. This project aims to extend the trail from its current northern endpoint to Burnet Road, where future shared-use paths are planned as part of the Burnet Road Corridor Program.
The city recently completed enhancements along Rutland Drive between Burnet Road and North Lamar Boulevard. These improvements include protected bike lanes, a two-way left-turn lane, new pedestrian crossings, and intersection safety upgrades. These developments are intended to enhance safety and create a more continuous protected bicycle and pedestrian network connecting downtown Austin with North Austin destinations like Q2 Stadium and the Domain.
Austin’s Urban Trails Program is designed to facilitate travel for people of all ages and abilities across the city. Additional information, including an interactive map of existing and proposed urban trails, is available on the City’s Urban Trails website.
