Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) announced on Mar. 10 that it is preparing for a surge in passenger traffic as Spring Festival Season and Spring Break approach, with the busiest days expected between March 12 and the end of the month.
The airport projects several days will see more than 30,000 departing passengers, particularly on March 22, March 23, March 29, March 30, April 5, and April 6. AUS is advising travelers to arrive at least two and a half hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. Passengers are also encouraged to check their flight status with airlines prior to arriving at the airport.
To accommodate increased demand, AUS has expanded its security screening options in the Barbara Jordan Terminal to four checkpoints. The new Checkpoint 4 provides easier access to gates above Gate 22. All checkpoints open daily at 3:00 a.m., and each leads to all gates within the terminal. Travelers are reminded that liquids must be limited to containers of no more than 3.4 ounces in carry-on bags and that firearms must be checked according to Transportation Security Administration guidelines.
Parking is expected to fill quickly during this period. The airport recommends reserving parking at least one day in advance through ABIAParking.com and checking real-time availability before arrival. Shuttle services from parking lots run every fifteen to twenty minutes. Both upper (departures) and lower (arrivals) levels are available for curbside pick-up or drop-off.
Accessibility remains a priority at AUS, which offers wayfinding assistance through the GoodMaps app for travelers with disabilities and participates in programs such as TSA Cares and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. Additional amenities can be found on FlyAustin.com.
Passengers flying Allegiant or Frontier will continue using the South Terminal until its closure on March 31, after which these airlines will relocate to the Barbara Jordan Terminal as part of long-term expansion plans aimed at modernizing facilities for continued growth in Central Texas.
AUS incorporates live music performances and art exhibits reflecting Austin’s cultural heritage, according to the official website. The airport features both the Barbara Jordan Terminal—with gates, shops, restaurants—and a South Terminal serving low-cost carriers; it is owned by the City of Austin Department of Aviation according to its official website. AUS provides nonstop flights across North America and Europe while offering various ground transportation options according to information from its official website.
