Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is set to expand its passenger processing capacity with the Atrium Infill Project, a significant component of the Journey With AUS Expansion Program. This project will add around 12,000 square feet to the Arrivals and Departures Hall in the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The expansion aims to accommodate more travelers waiting for TSA security screening.
Due to increased airline and passenger activity since 2022, TSA lines have extended outside terminal doors on busy days. The new space will address this issue by keeping lines inside until a new Arrivals and Departures Hall opens, potentially by 2030. The expansion involves filling in the open-air atrium above the baggage claim area.
Key features of the project include expanded queueing areas for security, upgraded mechanical systems, enhanced baggage claim facilities, and adherence to Austin Energy Green Building 3-star sustainability standards. Additionally, a permanent art installation led by local artists Josef Kristofoletti and Matthew Mazzotta will be included.
Construction may cause temporary noise and require protective enclosures for existing installations like the Barbara Jordan statue in baggage claim. However, no impact on TSA capacity or flight schedules is expected.
The project’s estimated cost is $50 million, with half funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Whiting-Turner serves as prime contractor with design by Corgan.
The Atrium Infill Project is part of broader efforts under the Journey With AUS program to modernize Austin’s airport infrastructure in response to regional growth demands.
