On June 26, Chairman’s Circle members had the opportunity to hear from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport CEO Ghizlane Badawi. The event, sponsored by HNTB, was part of the Chairman’s Circle series, which allows Austin Chamber’s highest-level members to engage with community leaders on issues impacting Central Texas.
Summer Lawton of HNTB interviewed Badawi about her new role and upcoming changes at the airport. Badawi detailed her career path: “My journey in aviation began as an internal auditor with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, a role that provided me with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of airport operations.” She explained how her diverse experience in various divisions fueled her passion for the industry and set the stage for her career growth.
When asked what excites her most about her work, Badawi highlighted the dedication of over 700 professionals in the aviation department. “Their commitment and passion inspire me every day,” she said. She also emphasized ongoing projects involving technological advancements and sustainability initiatives.
Badawi discussed the airport’s impact on the local economy through job creation, tourism, and business growth. “We have spent the last year focusing on communicating and connecting with our community,” she noted, mentioning efforts like open houses and industry days to strengthen ties with residents and businesses.
Regarding what makes Austin attractive for airlines, Badawi cited rapid population growth, a strong economy, vibrant tech scene, cultural events, and strategic location. To further increase attractiveness, she stressed community collaboration involving entities like the Chamber and Visit Austin.
The business community can support Austin-Bergstrom by utilizing nonstop routes and maintaining flight offerings. “In air service, we say ‘use it or lose it,'” Badawi remarked. She also mentioned opportunities for partnerships in retail services and sponsorships.
Looking ahead, Badawi outlined a vision centered around expansion and global connectivity. “Our goal is to ensure that AUS not only meets current demands but also sets new standards for innovation and sustainability,” she stated.
