Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued a stern warning to the City of Austin following a recent resolution passed by the Austin City Council regarding gender transition treatments for children. The resolution in question directs city officials to defy Texas state laws prohibiting certain treatments for minors.
Paxton criticized the resolution, stating, “the Austin City Council passed a resolution that purportedly directs the City Manager and city employees not to comply with Texas’s prohibition of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and invasive surgeries for children who believe their gender is different than their biological sex.” He emphasized that such treatments have been banned in Texas due to their potential dangers.
The Attorney General pointed out that the resolution issued by the Austin City Council contains contradictions, with clauses that seemingly direct non-compliance with the law while also acknowledging the need to follow it. Paxton warned that if Austin does not adhere to state laws and protect children, his office will explore all possible actions to ensure compliance.
Paxton asserted, “Texas municipalities do not have the authority to pick and choose which state laws they will or will not abide by. The people of Texas have spoken, and Austin City Council must listen.” The statement serves as a clear message that the State of Texas expects all its municipalities to uphold and adhere to state laws without exception.
