Arrest made in fatal traffic incident involving two vehicles in Austin

On August 19, 2025, James Preston Durbin was arrested and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a fatal traffic incident in Austin. The charges relate to an accident that occurred on August 11, 2025, at the intersection of South 1st Street and West William Cannon Drive. The crash involved two vehicles and resulted in the death of Samson Seablom, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Austin Police Department, Durbin’s arrest also includes an aggravated assault charge due to a pedestrian being injured by debris from the collision. This incident marks Austin’s 60th fatal crash of the year, resulting in 64 fatalities. In comparison, by this time in 2024, there had been 55 fatal crashes leading to 59 deaths.

The initial assessment of the crash is still under investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact APD’s Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111.
