Arrest made after traffic fatality at South 1st Street and William Cannon Drive

On August 19, 2025, James Preston Durbin was arrested and booked into Travis County Jail in connection with a fatal crash that occurred at the intersection of South 1st Street and West William Cannon Drive. Durbin faces charges of Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), the aggravated assault charge is related to a pedestrian who was struck by debris from the collision and sustained serious injuries.

The original incident took place on Monday, August 11, 2025, at approximately 2:37 p.m. APD officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles at the intersection. The driver of one vehicle was transported to the hospital, while Samson Seablom, identified as the driver of the second vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A pedestrian injured by debris from the crash was also taken to the hospital.

“This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 60th fatal crash of 2025, resulting in 64 fatalities. On the date of this crash in 2024, 55 fatal crashes resulted in 59 deaths.”

“These statements are from the initial assessment of the fatal crash, and the investigation is still pending. Fatality information may change.”
